Fort Walla Walla, Nez Perce National Historical Park and Update on Colored Pencil Artwork

Last week we traveled to central Idaho and got to see some great stops along the way.
Our first stop was at the Fort Walla Walla Museum in Walla Walla, Washington. If you have kids or if you are a history buff, this is a must-stop. The old 19th-century military fort is located in a large park where there is a museum, gift store, and a tribute to WWI and WWII vets. Every year they have the Lewis and Clark Living History Weekend with demonstrations, storytelling, and reenactments.

The Nez Perce National Historical Park Visitor Center is located 3 miles north of Lapwai, ID, on U.S. Highway 95. It is open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The center has Native American Exhibits of the Nez Perce featuring beadwork, saddles, attire, baskets, weaving, canoes, and the history and traditions of the Nez Perce. There is also a Nez Perce Photo Exhibit featuring 64 photos of chiefs, tribesmen, tribeswomen, and encampments. On the grounds is a garden area of the plants and vegetations used by the Nez Perce for medicinal and other purposes.

Newest Colored Pencil Work In Progress

Moving along on this colored pencil piece of mountain goat. Using Prisma Colored Pencils, Irojiten Colored Pencils and Copic Colorless Blender Marker.  I have to have this commission piece done by the end of July. So I will be working a great deal on it this coming week.

New Wildlife Colored Pencil Work-In-Progress of Mountain Goat

 Work-In-Progress

A bit further along on my work-in-progress. The surface paper is 9"x12" 400 series assorted tints Strathmore Artagain paper. I am using the tinted paper - Ivory.

Also, I am using Terracotta Prismacolor Verithin for the grisaille or under drawing of this part of the work-in-progress. I chose the color terracotta to bring out the cooler colors and complementary colors I will be applying in the rocks, sheep and sky. Once I get more of the fur done and the sky, I will begin layering colors on top of the grisaille.

Most under drawings or grisaille is done with a monochromatic color such as sienna, terracotta, grays or indigo blue. It is a great way to form details and shadows, very much similar to achieving a black and white photo.

Garden Flowers

God has blessed us with some beautiful weather and I had to share some recent photos from the garden. This is my favorite time of the year as flowers are just starting to bloom.

Sketch Fest, New Works and New Photos

Hey everybody it has been awhile since my last post. Sorry for the lack of posts. My mom has been battling lung and bone cancer since October of last year. And then the first of this year she also had kidney failure and heart failure. Praise God she is starting to do better.

Sketch Fest

So last weekend I got to participate in the 100th Sketch Fest.  I didn't have a whole lot of time to participate and I have to admit I am a bit rusty. The last time I participated was during the 90th Sketch Fest. Sketch Fest is a jam art session for 48 hours. You are only allowed 1 hour to complete a sketch. You have the option to sell the original and /or offer prints for sale of the art piece. It's a lot of fun and you get to participate with a wide variety of artistic levels from professional to amateur artists from all over the world and each one has their own unique style. If you are not an artist, you can submit prompts for artists to get their creative juices flowing or purchase art. The art piece below was done in colored pencil on brown card stock. The prompt was "Glittering Eyes". Not bad for someone who hasn't picked up colored pencils in months.

New Artworks

I have some new graphite pieces to share. I used Cretacolor Graphite for both of these commissions and Stonehenge Paper.

New Photo Manipulations

I got to dabble a little bit in college with photo manipulations in class, but I never really got to experiment with the variety of methods and techniques artists use. So, I am still in a learning process, but I want to start building up an on-line portfolio to show clients what I can do. So here are a few photo manipulations I have created so far.
